What is the difference between silk and satin fabrics?
are they the same in texture? and/or feeling?
Silk is a fiber -- made from the coccoons of silkworms. It can be made up in any of many different weaving patterns, so you can have silk satin, silk broadcloth, silk charmeuse, silk jacquard, silk chiffon, silk brocade, silk repp, silk crepe, silk velvet, etc. Typically, when people talk about silk fabric, they're picturing something like silk habotai, typically used as lining or blouse weight fabric or they're thinking about charmeuse:

This, btw, is a silk suiting -- notice the lack of luster because the fibers used to make the yarns are "noil" -- short bits from cocoons that were allowed to hatch:http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/20946606
Not all suitings are made of noil, but I tossed it in so you could see not all silks are shiny.
Satin is a weave, one of the three basic weaves (plain, twill, satin) that allows the warp yarns (usually) to "float" over several weft yarns before the warp yarn is taken under a weft. The shinier the yarns used and the longer the floats, the shinier the resulting fabric.

Because of the long floats, satins are fragile and do not wear well.
You can have satin made of wool, of silk, of nylon, of polyester, of mixtures of fibers.... cotton made in a satin weave is called "sateen" most commonly, but it is a cotton satin.
