Is my poem enjoyable? How could I make it better? Thanks in advance for the great insights many of you have?
Pet Names
My cats name went from
Arnold, to Barnold, to Arnbarn, to
Barn Full of Yarn
and before I knew it I was writing a poem called
“Barn Full of Yarn,” that had nothing to do with cats
and everything to do with, consumerism,
capitalism and the waste of surplus goods
in the post modernist world.
Poor cat.
not to jump on the band wagon, but i'm a not huge fan of post-modern poetry either - i like some symbolism & imagery in poetry, which you have none of.
i'm also not too fond of the fact that your poem doesn't connect on emotional level, there no plot or action to think about & t only makes sense on the most superficial level.
all that being said - i love, love, LOVE the sound of it. this poem has some of the most fiercely wicked internal rhyme that i have heard in a long time.
on an auditory level it's amazing & memorable, i wish it more substance, but it's fun lke really good candy. while i wish it wish it really deep deep & meaningful & still sounded so great, i wouldn't want to change the words for fear of losing that rhyme.
i'm concerned about the speed of it, i think it "reads" a little too fast. the way i read it to myself, it started off slowly, but when i got to lines 6-8 starting with "consumerism" my reading sped up & you have hit line 8 perfectly to maintain the rhyme & get it out in one breath. i'd suggest taking out the the comma, before "consumerism" in line 6 as well as "and the" before "waste of surplus goods" in line 8 so it flows better.
it's your call, whether the poem is more of a visual or meant to be spoken aloud.
the only other thing i would change would be the last line - it bugs me that it's so anti-climatic. i get the point of it - bu tit looks, feels & sounds like an afterthought. personally, i want to drop it or work it into something else.
lastly i also love the fact that this poem is NOT titled "Barn full of Yarn" - a very nice, clever touch.
