What is the best cat/kitten food on the market?
I've heard so many different opinions about which cat and/or kitten food on the market is the best. I've heard Science Diet, Iams, Sheba, Purina One, etc. To the cat experts out there - which cat food is the best as far as healthy and tasty? Also, is it better to for a one year old kitten to have soft or hard food?
Keep in mind one thing: Nature created cats to be obligate carnivores. That means that they were designed to eat meat, not grain. They have very little use for grains in their diets. That determines what you should and should not feed your cat.
Most grocery store foods (and Science Diet) are really nothing but grains. This really provides little to no nutrition for cats. Avoid foods with corn, and especially multiple sources of corn. Corn is hidden in food under different names to mislead you - it can say corn, ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, and maize. It's still corn, but since it's spread out in multiple types, it doesn't show up as the first ingredient on the list.
Also avoid foods that contain by-products. This is a very low quality protein source for your cat. It isn't real meat - it's all the scrap "parts" that have been deemed unfit for human consumption. It's such tasty bits as beaks, hides, tendons, feet, heads, intestines, spleens, spoiled and diseased meat, and even tumors. Nothing that you would intentionally buy and feed your pet!
Go to the pet store, and actually read the labels of the foods there. If it contains corn or by-products, pass it by. Cats are no different than humans in that feeding a proper healthy diet staves off a great number of health problems down the road.
Dry food is now linked to a number of feline disorders, including obesity, diabetes, urinary tract disorders, and kidney disease. Dry food was created for our convenience and not for the health of our cats. It keeps them perpetually dehydrated - cats are not big drinkers, and were meant to get most of their moisture from their live prey. Canned food best mimics this and is better for your cat's health.

So now you have decided to take a cat or kitten in to your home there are a number of points that you must think about first.
If you are thinking of a kitten you will need to be able to spend a lot of time with it when it is still very young. They will need a lot of attention until at least 6 months old. There is also the cost to think about as a young kitten will need to have all its jabs done and the yearly boosters kept up to date as if you want to place your cat in a kennels while you are on holiday then you will need proof of these injections.
Next you need to decide if you want a male or female cat/kitten, also whether you would like to have one or two cats (cats do like to have company especially if you are out at work all day and can't spend as much time as you would like with them). Whichever you choose it is always advisable to have them neutered/spayed as this stops the risk of unwanted kittens, as today there are so many in rescue homes that need re-housing.
You also have the choice of choosing a pedigree cat e.g. Siamese, which you would need to buy from a breeder as you very rarely find a pedigree cat in a rescue home, although it has been known. You will also find that some pet shops sell pedigree cats but whatever you decide remember that cat is going to be one of the family and should be treated as such.
It is not very often that you find a cat gets sick (I have had many in my lifetime) but you must always be prepared and know that you can afford to pay vet fees. Another option is cat insurance which is normally offered at very reasonable rates if you shop around on the internet.
A few things you will need before you bring your cat/kitten home:
- A cat carrier
- A bed for your cat
- A Litter Box and Litter
- Two dishes, one for food and one for water (not milk as this can damage the kidneys)
- Grooming tools if you decided to go for a long haired cat
- A collar with name tag and always advisable to have your cat chipped. Never put an address on a tag, just a name and phone number.
- Lastly your house must be cat proof.
By cat proof it means that there is nothing that the cat can hurt itself on. A small kitten will like to chew on wires and will pick up anything from the floor and try to eat it. Just as with a small child you need to be aware of anything that could be harmful to your pet.
Cats are very affectionate creatures and if given the love by it's owner then you won't be disappointed as they will return that love.
