Whats the difference between Generic Memory and Proprietary Memory?
So what is the difference? Which one is better? Better value? Anything would be appreciated. Reason I am asking is because I am looking in to building my own desktop, but I'm unsure on a few things, such as this.
Another thing is in Generic Memory, there is also a number of various types such as DDR II SDRAM, DDR3 SDRAM, FPM RAM, EDO RAM and more, again whats the difference, and which ones better?
Any other information on RAM would fantastic, thanks.
I have no clue what Generic Memory and Proprietary Memory is.
The reason for that is because these terms no longer exist in computers.
Proprietary memory was memory that a manufacturer made specifically for their computers. However, standards have been set now by JEDEC, and all memory manufacturers have to follow guidelines.
There are currently 3 types of memory that can be found on the market for consumers. It's DDR, DDR2, DRR3. DDR is the oldest and is almost phased out. DDR2 is today's standard, and DDR3 is new, but current costs are quite high, and most people still have DDR2.
Anyways, you have to base your memory on your motherboard. Most motherboards support only one type of RAM (either DDR1/2/3), and you have to know which type because you physically cannot put a DIMM (memory stick) into a slot that is not it's type.
So let's say your new motherboard supports DDR2 memory. That means you have to buy DDR2 memory in order to run your system- it's not backwards compatible or anything like that.
Also, RAM usually has a few other numbers beside it. There's usually a frequency (e.g. 533 MHz, 667 MHz, 800 MHz, etc) as well as timings (e.g 5-5-5-12, 3-3-3-8). A higher frequency means your RAM operates faster (just like a higher frequency for your CPU means it is faster). Lower (smaller) timings also increases RAM speed.
So what you're aiming for is to find the fastest RAM your motherboard can support, but with the lowest timings, and for a reasonable price.
