I do a lot of craft work, but don't have much experience using the sewing machine. I dont want an expensive on either.

Don't be tempted by the "mini-stitcher" type that are advertised for less than $50. They are flimsy and will only frustrate you. I recommend a Kenmore from Sears, they are made by Janome at a little less than the brand name cost. Wait for a sale and get yourself a basic model with a few utility stitches. That way it will be useful for crafts and mending, ect. Take a look at this one:
